Roasting Excellence: Celebrating 7 Years of Craft Origin’s Influence in Kuala Lumpur’s Coffee Scene

Craft Origin, a cherished corporate member of Italcham Malaysia, has been a cornerstone of the coffee scene in TTDI and Kuala Lumpur for seven years. Their specialty coffee shop fosters connections within the community and enriches Malaysian coffee culture through education and top-tier beans.

Craft Origin pays homage to Italy’s rich coffee heritage by embracing the uniformity of Italian espresso and championing the concept of modern specialty coffee, thus pushing the boundaries of flavor and experience.

In celebration of their 7th anniversary, our Chamber had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Zhao Yan, Director of Craft Origin.

1. How has Craft Origin contributed to the local coffee culture and community in TTDI and Kuala Lumpur since its establishment?

Since its inception seven years ago, Craft Origin has become a beloved hangout place among TTDI residents and the broader community. It has evolved into a cosy haven, ideal for gatherings of families and friends. 

As a speciality coffee shop, we believe our presence enriches Malaysian coffee culture through education, cultural awareness, and offering high-quality beans. Our dedicated team ensures the best coffee experience for our patrons. Looking ahead, we aim to further elevate Malaysian coffee culture through coffee-sharing programmes, participation in exhibitions, and hosting coffee-related activities.

2. What sets Craft Origin apart from other coffee shops and roasters in the area, and how have these unique qualities contributed to its success over the years?

Consistency is our pride at Craft Origin. Like other high-quality coffee shops and roasteries, we prioritise maintaining the unique flavour and quality of our coffee, ensuring a holistic coffee experience.

One of the biggest concerns for buyers is the potential variation in coffee quality due to factors like coffee grade, green beans, and weather conditions. Our roastery tackles this challenge by considering factors such as green bean density and size, as well as flavour characteristics learned during cupping, to consistently deliver the desired coffee aroma and flavour.

3. Could you highlight some of the notable achievements or awards that Craft Origin has received since opening its doors, including any accolades earned through participation in barista championships?

We strongly encourage our baristas and coffee roasters to participate in various competitions as part of our commitment to continuous improvement. Over the years, we’ve achieved outstanding results in coffee roasting, latte art, and hand-brewed coffee competitions. 

Notable achievements include winning the Malaysia Sample Roasting Championship 2023 and the SCOFI x DC Academy Coffee Roasting Competition 2022. With these accomplishments, we aspire to compete on a global stage and share our coffee knowledge with enthusiasts worldwide.

4. Is Craft Origin inspired by the coffee culture in Italy, and if so, how do you plan to incorporate that inspiration into your service and product offerings in the future?

Craft Origin draws inspiration from the coffee culture of Italy, where savouring a cup of coffee at a favourite café or at home is a cherished tradition. Like the Italians, we offer quick coffee fixes for busy customers, with aromatic blends reminiscent of dark chocolate—fragrant, low-acid, and easy to drink. We also embrace the uniformity of Italian espresso, with its medium to dark roast, predominant sweetness, slight sourness, and medium bitterness, complemented by caramelization aroma, dark chocolate, hazelnut, and toffee notes. 

Additionally, we champion the concept of modern speciality coffee, featuring light roasts with clear acidity, a clean taste, and floral and fruity aromas. Craft Origin is committed to innovation, conducting extensive research and development to expand the possibilities of coffee enjoyment for all.
